back roads
a nature diary
Here in these letters and, in many ways, everywhere in my life, my focus is on small details and small spaces. Our own garden, the “woods” down the street, places we can walk to from our downtown-ish location.
But sometimes we venture outside our neighborhood, our downtown, our city and the horse farms surrounding it.
Like this past weekend, for example, when we left for a bit of vacation, in a small town on the coast of Maine. We didn’t fly this time (which is quick and convenient but always has that slightly unreal quality of picking you up in one place and simply depositing you somewhere else). We drove, over the course of two and a half days.
The first 8-hour stretch was spent on interstates, in the pouring rain.
But starting out in the fog on day 2, we stuck to smaller state highways and back roads — taking us past vast stretches of farmland and forests; mountains and rivers; villages, small towns, and Amish communities.
Until next time,
Jennifer
I’m glad to have you with me on another nature walk (umm, drive).
If you’re curious, I also write very short, fictional tales inspired by our garden and its wildlife — quiet stories for adults who still love children’s books. Feel free to wander through at ReadPurr.com.
This newsletter is, and always will be, free to read. If you’d like to buy me a coffee, you’re welcome to do so here.

So much more enjoyable to travel leisurely, Jennifer. Back roads offer scope for creative imagination that an airplane journey often lacks. Lovely blue sky images 📷💙
